Nirakazhcha : Movie Review

Cast: Vincenzo Bocciaralli, Mamtha Mohandas, Manoj K Jayan ,Jagathy, Nedumudi Venu, Thilakan, Bijukuttan
Direction: Anish J Karinad

                   Nirakazhcha Movie Review

Aneesh J Karinad had been a journo and marketer before he attempted a chance in Mollywood.  Making movies is a different ballgame that he must have realised after his debut movie 'Nirkaazhcha. A  product largely devised as a marketing tool for some of the Desi resorts, than a  movie to appease viewers , this nonsense attempt might just be the one unwatchable thing to come out in recent times.

For any Mollywood regulars, this season with films like this would have made them appalled at the dreadful depths to which onscreen entertainment has fallen. Little can we question their sensibilities as this kind of   trashiness that saturates any good intentions towards Mollywood, is sure to desist them from making one more try on movies made in the language, particularly from debutant directors. Watching this can make you mentally ill, add to that a review on these kind of  tasteless, atrocious, and unprofitable films is unwarranted as it itself qualify them to end up as some sort of 'a movie' .

In a nutshell, the movie is about an Italian painter Lorenzo Fabri,(Vincenzo Bocciarelli) who is on a task to recreate Ravi Varma paintings. He falls in love with his model Shilpa, who is already in love with the Chenda artist Sreekuttan (Manoj K Jayan). Gradually Shilpa also starts loving and possessing the Italian, which leads into other twist in tales. To fill the gaps there are C I Marthandan (Jagathy Sreekumar), a local cop who is into a tuition centre run by Mamukoya to learn Italian, a Poovar Pookutty (Suraj Venjarammoodu) the music teacher, an Aksharavalli (Kalpana) the Malayalam tutor and a character by Bijukuttan, who pledges all his property and gold to stay in an Ayurvedic resort to find a German tourist to marry and ultimately fly to Germany. Add to these pathetic caricatures is the director Aneesh J Karrinad who himself appears as photographer Moonnar Mathai with a song pictured on him.

All these could have ended up as engrossing characters but the writing and execution fails to the extremes, to give you one of the most avoidable movies of the year.

With at Italian actor in the lead, here are plenty of scenes to voice concerns about the morality and values of the Indian culture and every scene stoops down to attempts of ridiculous misadventures. The poor Italian actor seems to be the scapegoat of all kind of unintended fun elements in the movie. The director just seems to have concentrated in placing ladies in bikinis and revealing costumes at regular intervals and Mamta Mohandas is one such object placed in the proceedings. This silly role remains the most un-demanded career move from Mamtha, who had been otherwise to skillfully written roles, in recent times. We are also surprised about what might have interested the other veterans who appear in the frames of such a thoughtless product. It also remains a criminal offence to use the names of  Bharathan and world famous painter 'Ravivarma' to endorse such absurdities.

It seems that that Malayalam cinema organisations must sketch out some kind of courses or basic exams on film aesthetics, whose qualification will only allow people to become directors and filmmakers .Or else, it is sure that the results of  this kind of  'learning while making' films will continue  the mass erosion of viewers to' other languages films' that are  made with real passion and dignified interests.

Pranchiyettan and the Saint Movie Review

Cast: Mammootty, Priyamani, Innocent
Direction: Renjith
Production: Renjith
Music: Ouseppachan

Pranchiyettan and the Saint Movie Review

Renjith had been the most happening writer-director of Mollywood for a couple of years, with his last attempts like 'Palery Manickyam' and 'Kerala Cafe' earning grand reviews and accolades from every sphere of filmdom. The director is for the season returning with an even more powerful but simple movie, ‘Prachiyettan and the Saint', a satire on the contemporary Kerala society and its hankering for status and recognition.

Teaming up with Mammootty, who once again displays his finesse in judging and selecting roles of content, the movie remains as one of the best in recent times in terms of the characterisation of the protagonist and the use of fine narrative techniques. Basically the movie is the story of Chirammal Eanashu Francis, a self made affluent rice merchant, who is always insecure about his societal status due to his low education and nickname ‘Aripraanchy’ that followed him throughout his life.
He makes a number of blunders in his life to see whether his large earned money can get him the status that he yearns for, thus erasing his branded nickname. Following his trusted aides including Vasu Menon, Bahuleyan, Subrahmani, Uthuppu and Co, he makes attempts on this by buying a 'Padmashree' for himself, starting a jewellery shop, contesting the elections for the president-ship of an aristocratic club, and even sponsoring every local events where he can show off his splendour.

It is after a lot of failed attempts on making it big that he meets Padmashree, an interior designer and Poly, a 15 year old, who makes a valuable turns in his life.

t is not just the story lines that holds our interest in 'Pranchiyettan' but the way it unleashes on screen. Told in flashbacks as narrated to the Saint Francis of Assisi (Jesse Fox Allen), the plot succeeds majorly with funny dialogues that pack in loads of quality humour and observations. The Thrissur slang that is employed throughout adds a certain likeability to the movie, though certain episodes of Pranchy's life are told in such detail that it tends to appear trivial and drags a little.

Mammootty convincingly display his histrionic skills in natural comic situations of the movie, never resorting to any elements of slapstick tracks that he had been to recently. The middle aged character who likes to take his every failure with a tinge of humour is also backed with one of the most positive on screen writing by Renjith, whose dialogues are simply awesome.

Among the supporting cast, Innocent is back to his vintage best portraying Vasu Menon. Priyamani as Padmashree and Kushboo as Omana, Pranchy's childhood sweetheart also are convincing, while Master Ganapathy as Poly also is in a memorable role. Ouseppachan in BG scores and Venu in camera also give apt support to Renjith in bringing out a memorable movie, which may equal his bests.

'Pranchiyettan and the Saint' is definitely prescribed for everyone who likes fresher themes and initiatives in Mollywood.

                                                          Shikaar Movie Review

After a few months, Mohanlal is finally back into a film that may work out in the Box Office. Yes, his ‘Shikaar.. The Hunt’ with some shortcomings, has the potential to gift him with a welcome hit, after all those recent duds.
Playing a lorry driver named Balaraman who is in the run from a forgettable past events, the movie is entirely shouldered by the versatile actor. And whenever it goes on to other petty off-stories out from the lead track, the feel of uneasiness is there. Anyhow, 'Shikaar’ with a plot about a man destined to escape from the revenge of his past deeds is a different thought and  a better product for Padmakumar , the  talented young director to end up his long wait for a hit.

Balaraman (Mohanlal)  a lorry driver, operating in the forest area called Chittazha, transporting bamboos is the leader of all good men of the high ranges, fighting with every outsiders who come up to  create havoc in the region. Constantly supported and followed buy Maniappan, his trusted aide, all his hopes are on his foster-daughter Ganga, who is all set to join a medical course securing a second rank in the entrance exams. But his haunting past follows him to this forest den, clearly making him over protective about his daughter and himself, to the extent of psychosis. With a group ready to make a miserable life for the protagonist for deeds that he had never committed, Balaraman now has to take the biggest risks of his life to save everything.

The highlight of the story by S. Sureshbabu is that even if you may find the story a damn regular after the show, the narrative techniques used and the finesse in keeping the suspense element till the last 30 minutes, succeeds big time. And even when the back stories are open, you really admit that there are reasons for the protagonist to fear his gruesome past. The problems with the movie is its roaming first half with no clear ideas on whether to or how to project the lead character as a mass hero. The  poorly choreographed  comic situations and forced fight sequences also add to the woes of the narratives. Both the two mass operations in the movie, the first by the police and the other by the Naxalites seems over the top, as the persons in the lookout are portrayed to get trapped with least of the difficulties. The dialogues also have not much steam to cherish. But in the second half, things falls into track and the climax is better than the proceedings that we were till then
The movie remains a visual treat with Manoj Pillai working at his helm, panning over the landscapes and lush green forests with some real adventurous shots. The other highlight naturally remains Mohanlal, who has given his heart out to another complex role, though the sequences needed to draw out the great performer in him are missing. But one thing about the movie and the actor is that no one can think about such a plot without him at the centre.  Samuthirakani in a cameo gets lots of applause for his fiery spirits. The rest of the cast including Lalu Alex, Ananya, Thalaivasal Vijay, and Kalabhavan Mani is ok in their parts. While Suraj fails to evoke laughter in a half baked role, Jagathy manages to make things merry with his immaculate timing and performance, a sharp contrast about the abilities of the both. Sneha is in short role, just to appear beautiful while Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and Kailash's cameo are engaging.

Renjan Abraham in editing could have cleaned up some more sequences which could have made the movie a lot more finer. The art director of the movie also have worked overtime to give a realistic look to the temporary village. M Jayachandran's four song's are good, but comes up in wrong portions of the narratives: in fact, the movie may not be affected even without any of the songs.

All in all, M Padmakumar will manage to make a name of his own as a hit director through 'Shikaar', though in a slippery terrain of a non-conventional theme. The movie may end up well for him and Lal, if marketed well.

IMRAN HASHMI : Biography

Emraan Hashmi’s six years in Bollywood have earned him the title of a serial kisser owing to a surplus of scorching, lingering, fleeting kisses that his roles have demanded of him, ensuring he is always in demand. There is more to him than that, of course.
Backtracking
Emraan Anwar Hashmi was born on 23 March 1979 to Anwar, a Muslim and Maherahh, a Catholic. Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt is his uncle and actress turned director Pooja Bhatt is his cousin. He is also related to singer Atif Aslam.

He graduated from Sydenham College in Mumbai.

CAREER
Emraan made his debut in Bollywood with Footpath in 2003 but the film didn’t do well. The following year he acted in Anurag Basu’s Murder, a thriller, with Mallika Sherawat. The film became a hit and drew the audience’s eyes on him. The three films released in 2005-Zeher, Aashiq Banaaya Aapne, and Kalyug-got lucky at the box office, while the soundtracks of all his films became popular by their own right. Zeher was based on Hollywood’s Out of Time, while Aashiq Banaaya Aapne was about love and friendship. Kalyug was on the darker side of the spectrum looking at the pornography industry.

In 2006, he had several films hitting the theaters like Jawaani Deewani, Akshar, and The Killer. Gangster did well and was rumoured to be based on the relationship between Monica Bedi and Abu Salem.

The 2007 releases Good Boy Bad Boy, The Train, and Awaarapan didn’t fare well. In 2008, he played Arjun involved in a healthy dose of love and crime in Jannat.

He was the perfect Prithvi, a painter, in the horror flick Raaz – The Mystery Continues (2009). Tum Mile (2009) with Soha Ali Khan received good reviews. It was about the ex-lovers reuniting during the infamous Mumbai floods of 2005.

CROOK : Serial Kisser back to his erotic  best

The kisser boy Emraan Hashmi has been doing a lot of different roles lately and guess what, for a song ‘Mere Bina’ from his next film Crook- It’s good to be bad, which IS releasing on 8th October, 2010, the actor turned a vampire on the sets. Not just this he also dressed up as a girl and stunned. Actually the story goes back to shooting of the song, where Mohit Suri, the director of Crook, wanted to shoot a fun song in Australia, but wasn’t getting it right and called a break. Meanwhile, Emraan went in to a shop, that’s stocked the wigs and girls costumes and Emraan just randomly started to have fun and try some female costumes and vampire teeth. That’s when Mohit immediately said that he would be capturing it on camera for the song. Emraan was surprised and hesitant first but once Mohit explained the need of the fun element and convinced Emraan, the actor just went out of his comfort zone and dressed up as a girl and a vampire to go all out for the fun shoot.

“It was a fun shoot and it really took me by surprise when Mohit asked for an impromptu shoot because we were only entertaining ourselves in the shop and I did not know that he had such thought in his mind. I was hesitant at first but when we realized that it was all about having fun and being casual and our natural best, we just crossed all the limits and that can be seen in the film itself. I have been romancing girls in my films and myself dressing up as a girl was something really very very funny. The song will be out soon and I am hoping people will like it”- laughs out Emraan.
Crook- It’s good to be bad is a Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films production, a banner known vividly for its out of ordinary films and chartbuster music. Their films always had an issue to address but in a typical Bollywood style. This time it is the issue of Racial Discrimination with the Indians living abroad and especially highlighting the recent attacks on Indians in Australia. The film stars Emraan Hashmi and known for giving way to the newcomers in the industry, this time too, Vishesh Films is giving break to a new girl Neha Sharma in this film. The film also casts ‘Fashion’ Boy Arjan Bajwa. Directed by Mohit Suri, the film has all the elements to make it a masses’ film- romance, comedy, action, Thrill and ofcourse an issue, which sums it all. The music of the film is on Sony Music and has been scored by music maestro Pritam, whose association with the ‘Bhatts’ has been very fruitful lately with hit albums like Jannat and Tum Mile.
